Strappado
With Tamandua
Tamandua will teach his most commonly used strappado, offering both an elbows together and elbows apart variation, designed to work both as a standalone tie and as part of a suspension. We will cover the function of each part of the tie, how it behaves under load, and how to manage tension and positioning effectively. Anatomy and body response in the strappado will be a key focus, as this tie carries a higher risk for nerve and shoulder issues. We will address common causes of problems and practical ways to prevent or resolve them.
Prerequisites:
Students tying should have prior experience with chest harnesses and be familiar with basic rope handling and tension control. Students should have some experience building and assessing uplines, and should have confidence in rope communication skills and knowledge of risk and safety in rope suspension.
Those in rope should have confident in-rope communication skills, knowledge of safety and risk in rope suspension, and confident ability to monitor signs of nerve compression.
Instructor Bio:
Tamandua (he/him) is a Swedish kinbaku instructor and rope switch based in Berlin.
He has been working with rope professionally since 2016, offering intimate sessions and advanced shibari education, and traveling the world to teach his perspective on tying and to being tied. He is a queer person, who appreciates tying with people of various gender. As a switch, he draws his inspiration both from the models/bottoms he ties with, and the riggers/rope tops he models for, which has allowed him to experience various styles from the inside as well.
‘I consider kinbaku to be a complex erotic art, which is empathetically sadomasochistic at it’s core. Often tying in a way that can be challenging both for the one tying and the one in the
ropes, my Shibari usually demands a lot of technical clarity when in the role of a teacher. At the same time, the student’s individuality is a priority when it comes to learning methods and intention. I view Kinbaku as a practice of continuous exploration – where new doors open as you go deeper and further with a partner, over the course of a session, or over the course of a long partnership. Sometimes though, the magic that defines Kinbaku can be just that one alluring image that sticks with you, a moment suspended in time. For me, the essence of Kinbaku lies in the meeting between the aesthetic expression and the emotional and sensual intention of the practice. And the more ones tying develop, the more seamlessly the parts can intermingle.’
