Wheel of Consent

Wheel of Consent Practice Circle

with Beth and Masha

The Wheel of Consent, developed by Betty Martin, is a wonderful framework to help us ask for what we want, to find our pleasure, and to deepen our capacity for authentic connection, intimacy and compassion. Learning about the different quadrants (Serve, Take, Accept and Allow) can help bring clarity around giving and receiving and distinguishing between who is doing and who it’s for. Practicing the Wheel through touch exercises helps to bring the quadrants into our bodies!

This offering will be an opportunity for ongoing practice of the Wheel of Consent, through solo and paired exercises, discussion, and reflection. This is for you if you are familiar with the Wheel of Consent, or would like to learn more! Bring your curiosity and join us!

Participants are welcome to participate or observe, or request that the exercises be non-touch. Seating is mostly on the floor on mats (There are few seats available on a small couch.) We will have some cushions and pillows available, if you are able please bring a small pillow and/or blanket. Please note: space opens 15 minutes before the start of the circle. Due to the sensitive subject of this workshop, please give yourself time to arrive and ground in the space to start on time with the opening circle.

Facilitator Bios:

Beth Poague (bethpoague.com) is a curious, solo poly, queer, forest dweller living in the Hudson Valley. She came to rope and kink relatively late in life, and has been doing suspension for four years. Beth has a Master’s degree in Social Justice Educational Studies, with a focus on disability justice and inclusion. She’s a certified trainer of the Wheel of Consent (schoolofconsent.org), and also trained in restorative practices and conflict resolution, including circle-keeping, transformative mediation, and group facilitation. She thinks a lot about somatics and co-regulation, neurodivergence and trauma, healing and connection, abolitionism, collective care, nature and poetry.

Masha (theropejourney.com) has been a rope practitioner on both sides of the rope since 2018 and weaves together 30 years of experience as a nurse and midwife, and more recent studies in somatic trauma therapy and psychedelic healing, with her love of Japanese-inspired rope bondage. As a rope educator since 2022, she has been teaching consent in the context of rope and co-developed the beginner rope curriculum at Temple. She loves to create rope learning spaces where people can slow down enough to attune to themselves and each other, perceive their bodies, and feel their feelings. The Wheel of Consent has been an inspiration for this work and she has been deepening her understanding of this framework through workshops and self study. She is thrilled about the opportunity for regular WoC practice within the rope community!
