This workshop emphasizes collaborative tying, with the instructor engaging directly with each participating pair to support their learning process. If possible in the environment, participants will work not only with a traditional single suspension point but also explore variations using pillars, chairs, and other elements to expand their adaptability and creativity.

Moments of reflection are woven into the experience, with group conversations following each session to share impressions, questions, and discoveries. The teaching approach remains intentionally fluid: guided but not prescriptive. Rather than directing fixed outcomes, the workshop gently interrupts repetition, opening pathways toward new possibilities. Participants are encouraged to sense when patterns become familiar and to step beyond them, cultivating a deeper awareness of choice, presence, and connection within their tying.

A note from Murasaki for participants:

The difference between beginners and intermediate/advanced students is not really about learning dramatically different techniques. Rather, it is whether you can continue to handle multiple ropes and rope ends naturally while maintaining your concentration and awareness of your partner.

In Yukimura-ryu, full suspension is rare, so those kinds of technical suspension skills are not particularly important. What is important is being able to understand your partner’s feelings, perceive subtle changes in them, and then respond through the rope itself. For beginners, this process starts with a single rope.

For intermediate and advanced students, the challenge is to maintain that same quality of communication while managing a greater number of ropes and a more complex situation.
